Start with the basics and add control as your operation grows.
- Match colour to purpose: warm white (2700 to 3000K) is generally preferred for layers and breeders, while cool white suits brooding and general work areas. Coloured and spectrum bulbs are used in specific layer and breeder programs.
- Get the intensity right: too bright encourages pecking and feather damage; too dim cuts feed intake. A dimmer or an intensity controller lets you tune light level by bird age without rewiring.
- Control the photoperiod: a programmable light timer gives consistent day length, which matters most for layer egg output and breeder uniformity. Flicker-free dimmable LEDs reduce bird stress compared with cheap flickering lamps.
- Plan for the environment: in dusty, humid sheds that get washed down, choose IP65 or IP67 rated bulbs and tubes so you are not replacing lamps every season.
